How to be a CHALLENGER to Increase Sales

We’ve all heard that people do business with those they know, like, and trust. This message has been around longer than we’ve been alive.

But did you know that people actually do business with those they RESPECT as much as any other trait? This is according to a Harvard Business study.

Where does respect come from? To me, it’s showing that you’ve been BATTLE-TESTED

Definition: having experienced and been toughened by battle

To me, being battle-tested means you have unique experiences and struggles that you’ve personally overcome. You have scars (emotional & physical) that gives you an edge.

I believe newer or younger salespeople can STRUGGLE with sales early on because when they get objections or pushback i.e. challenged they don’t have the CONFIDENCE to overcome objections or PUSH right back…

Most people believe that in sales the relationship-builder is king. However, one of the largest studies on salespeople ever recorded disproves this (The Challenger Sale).

  • 40% of high sales performers primarily used the challenger style.
  • Only 7% of top performers took a relationship-building approach (the least effective of the five styles according to this book).

To CHALLENGE people, you must know that you are the EXPERT. Have supreme confidence that you are good at what you do.

The Challenger Sale: A sale in which the rep teaches the prospect something about their business, tailors their pitch to resonate with customer concerns, and takes control of the sales process.

  • Loves to debate or push customer
  • Strong understanding of the customer’s business.
  • Knows the customers value drivers
  • Is comfortable discussing money.
  • Offers a unique perspective to the customer.

The analogy I personally enjoy the most is what’s the first thing you do when you get onto a rollercoaster? You test the harness to make sure it’s locked… I believe sales is very similar with many big-time prospects. They will CHALLENGE you to see if you are an expert.

When you’ve been battle-tested you aren’t afraid to:

  • Teach others new or valuable information because you have experienced it.
  • Tailor the sales pitch to resonate with the decision-maker’s hot-button issues (money changes hands when problems are solved)
  • Take control of the discussion around pricing and challenge the customer’s thinking around the problem.

You can say almost anything to anyone, depending on how you say it…

The next time you’re challenged don’t be afraid to stand your ground and challenge right back. But in order to do this.. you need to be battle-tested and challenged before. There’s only one way to do this, through unique experiences.

Sales is a contact sport. Get in the action. Go for no. Some will. Some won’t. But so what…

Are you a Person of Interest or Influence?

Many of my solopreneur friends are losing out on deals to those far less talented and knowledgeable. As a result, they are paying thousands of dollars each month on digital marketers who promise to deliver 5x the return on their investment. But instead, many feel like they are “selling out” and becoming cheesy salespeople who have lost their unique voice.

That’s because most digital marketers want to automate each individual into the same funnels, email sequences, and ads as the rest of their clients. I’ve been guilty of this “get-rich-quick” marketing ploy myself.

Here’s what I’ve realized from personal experience and the dozens of conversations with other solopreneurs.

There’s a big different between being a person of interest and a person of influence.

Let me explain…

A person of interest is someone who is focused on the short-term. They have a what’s in it mindset and the reason they want to get more attention is to feed their ego.

A person of influence is someone who is focused on the long-term. They understand that they need more attention for their business, but do so in order to INFLUENCE other people and not for self-deprecation.

Why is this so important?

We live in a “look at me” world now more than ever through influencer marketing. Influencers pay thousands of dollars on video or photoshoots with other influencers, in front of expensive cars, planes, or houses that aren’t theirs. While this marketing strategy makes people more “interesting” it also makes them fake.

Your personality (image) gets your foot in the door but your character (reputation) is what keeps us there.

Don’t sacrifice your brand reputation or your unique voice to become a person of interest.

What is a Person of Influence?

There are two types of influencer marketing that we recommend you focus on to become a must-have, go-to EXPERT in your space and to create a business that’s built to last.

  • Community Influencer who is visible in the community. Attend and host events that matter to you and show up to events that matter to your advocates and connectors. You support them and they support you because of authenticity not for business exposure.
  • Industry Influencer who is an authority figure and leader in their field because of elite knowledge, skill, desire, and confidence. They work extremely hard to be an expert in their industry. Because of that, others take notice and call of them for specific information to their related field.

Now more than ever, we must protect the integrity of our industries for scammers and posers. You work really hard to INFLUENCE people through your services. This article and video is meant to give you permission to humble brag on yourself. To get more attention as a person of influence so that you can positively impact more people for the right reasons.

Self-promotion isn’t evil in today’s world but necessary. But do it with the mindset of a go-giver who doesn’t necessarily “want” the attention but needs it to better serve more people.

Be Brutally Honest with Yourself

Having spent the majority of my life studying and coaching top producers and having a PhD in Human Performance I’ve realized that success isn’t quite as complicated as we try to make it out to be.

If you’re not having the desired results you think you should be having quick enough then you’re probably in one of two categories right now…

Reason #1: You don’t know WHAT to do.

Reason #2: You know what to do but simply aren’t consistent in doing it.

I hate to oversimplify this because running and operating your own business by no means is easy. However, I want you to have a crucial conversation with yourself, and to help you work through the solutions based on which category you fall into.

Reason #1: You don’t know WHAT to do

If you don’t know what to do or how to do it then the solution would be the following:

  • Spend ATLEAST 30-minutes per day sharpening your knowledge and skills.

Knowledge:

  • Have one or two mentors who you can call and seek advice from
  • Have one or two disciples who you consistently study their materials
  • Spend free time (non-selling hours) learning more about your products/services

Skill:

  • What 3-5 skills are crucial to your short-term success in your industry?
  • Spend time daily sharpening your skills such as scripts, objection handling, listening skills, phone skills, one-to-one skills, etc.

Reason #2: You simply aren’t doing it.

Unfortunately, a lot of producers fall into this category because it’s either harder than we thought or it takes longer than we thought. Your business should almost be “boring” in terms of the daily activities we know we should be doing.

Daily Accountability

  • Training isn’t something we “did” it’s something we do.
  • Have clear, tangible benchmarks around sales activities
  • We all need some form of accountability
  • Everybody needs a coach in life

When we know better we should do better. If not, then we are simply being negligent to our future success and our potential. Sometimes it’s ok to be hard on yourself when you know you aren’t doing the heavy-lifting required daily to be successful. I’m giving you permission to get an edge to you and to tap into that competitive spirit. Especially if you fall into category number two.

We will far more regret what we could have done, should have done, but did not do in life.

Which category do you fall into and what are you going to do about it right now to achieve the results you know you are capable of?

Do Good Anyways…

If you’re into documentaries I’ll encourage you to check out Iron Cowboy on Netflix. It’s an incredible story of an Ironman competitor who breaks the world record for most ironman in one year with 30 in 11 countries in 2012. He set the record on accident and of course, like most driven competitors, that wasn’t enough.

One day while on his bicycle, which was his “creative” place because he enjoys biking the most, he came up with 50/50/50. That’s 50 ironmans, in 50 days, in 50 states.

Just for context. That’s 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling and a full 26.2-mile marathon run every day for 50 days straight. And he did all of this while traveling in an RV with his family sleeping on average of 4.5 hours a nigh.

When you do good people will accuse you of ulterior motives…

But unfortunately, my biggest takeaway from this remarkable feat was when people actually TURNED on him less than halfway through because he was taking IV’s and one day instead of running outside or on the treadmill he ran on an elliptical. The social media page became flooded with negativity from people trying to diminish his incredible feat and resilience.

Oh, and did I mention, he was doing all of this to raise money for charity?

As I was watching, it made me think about the coaching business. When we hold people accountable they get mad at us and when we don’t hold people accountable they get mad at us. If you allow it, your mind can turn NEGATIVE and we can become jaded real quick.

When it’s easy to go negative we have to remain positive.

James almost let this negativity derail what he set out to do when he had a breakdown. But sometimes it takes a breakdown to have a BREAKTHROUGH. He was able to rebound QUICKLY and refocus on WHY he’s doing what he’s doing.

James almost let the negativity of social media and “haters” stop him from achieving one of, if not the most, amazing physical feats ever. Instead of focusing on the people he was inspiring he let the negative noise impact him, understandably.

Sometimes we must have a breakdown to have a breakthrough. Your WHY and your SUPPORT group is vital to your success (share it with people and don’t allow haters to remain around your inner-circle)

So in the end. I’ll leave you with Mother Teresa’s poem “Do Good Anyways.”

I was “resistant” to gratitude as of last year and even called it the “feel good
movement” singing Kumbaya, but have since adopted gratitude and affirmations into my
daily schedule. Mainly because of how powerful the subconscious mind is and the
importance of building and protecting our confidence daily.

There’s a couple points to go over today:
1) What’s the difference between affirmations and gratitude
2) What’s the SCIENCE behind why they work
3) How to build into your daily routines and habits

Part I: Gratitude vs. Affirmation
Gratitude = the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return
kindness. "she expressed her gratitude to the committee for their support"
– I’m not yet where I WANT to be but thank goodness I’m not where I once was.
– I GET to vs. I “have” to
-Opportunity vs. obligation

Affirmation = the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed.
-It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of WHEN I make it
-I’m one CALL or CONVERSATION away from a major breakthrough
-I am a successful person. I am just as good at what I do as anyone else.
-It’s my DUTY to fight to earn business.

Part II: The SCIENCE behind gratitude
1) Gratitude makes us happy… but it takes several months because:
– Cultivating gratitude is a skill. Ability to “self-generate” feelings of gratitude on
command.
– Gratitude is a personality trait. Some people have more grateful personalities.
2) Gratitude makes us HEALTHER
– Exercise more. Don’t get sick as often. Sleep better.
3) Gratitude makes people LIKE us…
-Nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative. Deeper relationships…
Other traits include:
– Career trajectory
– Strengthens our EMOTION meaning higher emotional intelligence (#1 success
indicator)
-More optimistic = daily gratitude journal means increase in optimism 15% and
5% for weekly

Part III: Celebrate Success
Schedule Gratitude Time:
-Schedule 10 mins in the morning and before you go bed to journal
o Reach out to friends/family
o Reach out to favorite people in business
o Spend time self-loving or repeating affirmations in the mirror
– Schedule 30-mins on weekends to think BIGGER (marketing)
How to celebrate Success:
– Largest gap in the world is the execution gap (actual 1 vs. actual 2 and how to
measure)
-I’m not yet where I want to be but thank goodness I’m not where I once was
– Stay focused on the PROGRESS over perfection
-It’s not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN I’m going to make it
– Celebrate your FRIENDS success
o In order for you to “win” someone else doesn’t have to lose
o What’s the first thought that goes through your head when someone else has
success? Are you mad that you didn’t have it or happy for them?

Conclusion: Success and happiness isn’t a “destination” that you arrive at. A lot of people
believe if they can just get “this, this, and this” THEN they’ll be happy. This is called the
arrival fallacy. Happiness is internal. And needs to be worked on every day.
– So enjoy the ride, be thankful of what you DO have, and thank all the wonderful
people in your life for it. But also TAKE OWNERSHIP of your life in all areas.

What do you think works better… Gratitude or Affirmations?

I was resistant to gratitudes last year because I thought it was the corny “feel good movement.”

But life is about trying new things, and when the most successful people in the world do certain things… might as well test it out!

The subconscious mind is so powerful and I talk a lot about protecting your self-confidence daily and the gratitude and affirmations increased my confidence dramatically!

In today’s topic of discussion I go over:
1) What’s the difference between affirmations and gratitude
2) What’s the SCIENCE behind why they work
3) How to build into your daily routines and habits

Gratitude and affirmations don’t just work right away, they are both skill based and take practice every day just like working out or business.

Part I: Gratitude vs. Affirmation

Gratitude = the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. “she expressed her gratitude to the committee for their support”

  • I’m not yet where I WANT to be but thank goodness I’m not where I once was.
  • I GET to vs. I “have” to
  • Opportunity vs. obligation

Affirmation = the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed.

  • It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of WHEN I make it
  • I’m one CALL or CONVERSATION away from a major breakthrough
  • I am a successful person. I am just as good at what I do as anyone else.
  • It’s my DUTY to fight to earn business.

Part II: The SCIENCE behind gratitude

  • Gratitude makes us happy… but it takes several months because:
  • Cultivating gratitude is a skill. Ability to “self-generate” feelings of gratitude on command.
  • Gratitude is a personality trait. Some people have more grateful personalities.
  • Gratitude makes us HEALTHIER
  • Exercise more. Don’t get sick as often. Sleep better.
  • Gratitude makes people LIKE us…
  • Nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative. Deeper relationships…

Part III: Celebrate Success

Schedule Gratitude Time:

  • Schedule 10 mins in the morning and before you go bed to journal
    • Reach out to friends/family
    • Reach out to favorite people in business
    • Spend time self-loving or repeating affirmations in the mirror
  • Schedule 30-mins on weekends to think BIGGER (marketing)

How to celebrate Success:

  • Largest gap in the world is the execution gap (actual 1 vs. actual 2 and how to measure)
  • I’m not yet where I want to be but thank goodness I’m not where I once was
  • Stay focused on the PROGRESS over perfection
  • It’s not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN I’m going to make it
  • Celebrate your FRIENDS success
    • In order for you to “win” someone else doesn’t have to lose
    • What’s the first thought that goes through your head when someone else has success? Are you mad that you didn’t have it or happy for them?

Happiness isn’t a Destination

What is a lifestyle entrepreneur?

Some say a “lifestyle entrepreneur” is an entrepreneur who makes their living online.

They don’t have a physical location or need one to operate. All they need is a laptop and connection to the Internet to manage their business.

Here’s what I believe the true meaning is…

Lifestyle entrepreneurship simply means you create a business around the kind of lifestyle you want.

  • If you want to do more hobbies then do more hobbies.
  • If you want to take more vacations then take more vacations.
  • If you want to spend more time with your family then spend more time with your family.

But figure out how to be just as, if not more, effective in your business while doing so. The new-age Work/Life balance means understanding what INTENTIONAL CONGRUENCE is, and why it’s the future of business.

This is where your business serves your life vs. runs (ruins) your life.

You understand that your hobbies, interests, friends, and family can feed your business. You can work from anywhere, with anyone, at anytime. And your loved ones can be there every step of the way supporting you.

How to build a business that SERVES your life vs. runs your life!

  • Do the things you enjoy with the people you enjoy
  • Be a person of interest/influence in the community as a leader
  • When you go out of town invite other influencers or partners to join your family and go much deeper in the relationship.
  • Have daily non-negotiables and routines around personal and professional development that you are accountable to.
  • Leverage resources like social media to share your experiences with the world.

Don’t believe me that this works? Why does it seem like more people call you on vacation than any other time?

It’s because the days leading up to vacation you are more productive than any other time. You do more money-generating activities, and have a sense of urgency. Combined with the fact you’re more active on social media while you’re away which gets you attention.

The opposite of interesting is boring, and money follows attention and energy.

Could being a lifestyle entrepreneur actually be a new way of life for you?

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely LOVE the summertime. There’s always a barbecue to go to. Or a pool party. Or an outdoor activity like rooftops or concerts. However, there are also a lot of distractions and obstacles that we’ll have to overcome. Many of these are caused by our own emotions, because of the external things we enjoy doing.

So the question becomes; how can we stay in a routine or get back in a routine once we’ve lost it?

The definition of routine is a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.

Why are definitions so easy on-paper?

There’s No Such Thing as Time Management

I was taught early in my career there’s no such thing as TIME management only ME management. We all get the same amount of time in a day. How and with whom we spend that time is our choice.

Nobody said business should be boring, but it’s a slippery slope with the autonomy and freedom we get as solopreneurs. I believe that time-block CREATES autonomy for us.

How to get back in routine…

+ Recommit to your why or bigger future (2020 Vision – 90-180 days from now)

  • Go there in the MIND…
  • Daily/Weekly affirmations/intentions/gratitude
  • Spend 15-minutes on Saturday thinking bigger about your future

+ Prioritize what’s important to your business

  • Spend 15-minutes on Sundays planning for the week
  • Non-Negotiables for your business

+ Be accountable to daily disciplines

  • Start SMALL… ONE Thing (if you only got on thing done per day…)
  • Make and keep commitments to yourself FIRST
  • Minor, Private Victories always precede major public victories

Exercise: What daily/weekly Non-Negotiables do you have for your business?

  • Personal example: videos, content creation, daily prospecting

Exercise: What obstacles will you face this week that will keep you from your non-negotiables?

  • Personal Example: Summer fun, Happy Hour, Traveling, Networking

Professional = PAID. Amateur = NOT PAID.

  • Intentional Congruence means ALL parts feed all parts
  • Journal what times you get tired or distracted each day

Routine (Morning vs. Theme Days)

  • Morning
    • Personal Development
    • Professional Development
    • Marketing Development
  • Theme Days
    • Be Proactive with your days and with your mindset

Reminder: Momentum is just energy moving in one direction or another. We are less than six months away from 2020. Do you need to recommit to your 2019 to position yourself to CRUSH 2020?

5-Habits of Successful Solopreneurs

If you haven’t done so, please be sure to check out the PILOT of the Solopreneur Movement. This gives detail into why we started this community and why it’s so relevant to you, the solopreneur.

What is the WHOLE Salesperson?

We believe there are five key areas of any solopreneurs business that, if mastered, will guarantee success. Yes, we understand this is a strong claim but having coached thousands of people these have been universally proven to be true.

5-Habits of Successful Solopreneurs

Habit #1: Opportunity Statement

Having something to say in the first conversation is just as important as having somebody to say it to. Mastering the opportunity statement will set up your marketing for the rest of your career.

6-Parts of a World Class Opportunity

Part 1: What do you believe? Your Tag-Line

Part 2: Why do you believe it? Unique Past

Part 3: What you actually do? How you help

Part 4: How you do it different? Competitive Advantage

Part 5: Who you’ve done it for? Social Proof

Part 6: Can I help you? The Ask

Habit #2: Proactive Prospecting System

Sales is a game of probability and over 90% of people don’t have a consistent, disciplined selling system. They aren’t proactive with their prospecting and aren’t help accountable to the daily sales activities. We believe everybody competes harder with a daily scoreboard and clear benchmarks.

Habit #3: Follow-Up System

The fortune is always in the follow-up. Most people only follow-up a few weak times. We’ve created 10-touch “with value” system for new leads and your Fight Club follow-up.

Habit #4: Unique Customer Experience

Almost everyone says their customer experience is “unique” but for most it’s just lip service. We’ve worked hard to help you unpack your company free prize, your individual competitive advantage, and an onboarding process that quickly REWARDS your business.

  1. Reviews
  2. Referrals
  3. Repeat Business

Habit #5: Influencer Marketing

To attract other people, we must become more attractive. We believe status sells and the reason you should aspire to become a person of interest is to become a person of influence who helps more people through your services. Motivated buyers use the first person they talk to 67% of the time. This is marketing 101 to get more attention.

Welcome to the Solopreneur Movement.

What is a Solopreneur?

A person who sets up and runs a business on their own.

“Being a solopreneur has forced me to learn how to handle all aspects of business”

We define solopreneurs as traditional entrepreneurs who create a brand-new product or the new-age salesperson who leverages someone else’s products and sells it. Either way, the production falls solely on the individual to produce results on their own.

Why the Movement?

The Small Business Administration reports that around 50 percent of small businesses are home-based firms, including 60.1 percent of firms without paid employees. Sole proprietorships are by far the most common types of these businesses, according to the same data. It’s also reported that 1-out-of-8 jobs in the United States are salespeople.

This number will only continue to rise given the times we live in. We have more resources than ever before to leverage and stand out through. People now have choices as to how they want to make their living.

We are not saying that being a solopreneur or running a business is easy, by any means. It’s actually quite the opposite; however, we do believe that with that with the right systems, confidence, and conviction in your services that the probability of success will drastically increase. Which is why we are bringing together a community of like-minded individuals as a support group.

What is Community?

In its purest form, a community is a group of people who come together in support of a worthy cause and form comradery. Our community is all about sharing. Sharing ideas. Sharing success stories. Sharing struggles. In doing so, we will mastermind together, train together, and even do business together all over the world.

Why Bruce Lund?

For over a decade, Dr. Bruce Lund has trained thousands of professionals all over the world. His journey began as a 25-year old career author and speaker to young professionals on personal branding (before personal branding was popular). Since that time, Bruce has helped

With a PHD in Human Performance, Bruce has dedicated his life’s work to studying and coaching ultra-successful people. He has one basic belief in life that trained people always outperform untrained people. Through a great trainer and accountability you’ll achieve increased productivity faster.

Our Mission

Having gone through as much “schooling” as you could possibly go through, Bruce has realized that the education system does a poor job in creating or preparing solopreneurs. That’s why he decided to leave higher education to “get in the trenches” with fellow entrepreneurs to grow business together.

We believe a plan should be “easy” on-paper. How many times in a day or a week do you say, “I need a system for that?” Together, let’s get back to the basics of business. It’s often been said that either you run your day or your day runs you. There’s no denying that we must react every day in our business, but that shouldn’t stop us from being as proactive as possible.
